How to apply make up - 4 steps to finding the right shade of foundation

One of the top questions on how to apply make up is how to choose the correct foundation color.

The key, is to know which part of your face you are trying to blend.

The part you are trying to match is the area between the nose and the jaw connection.

1 - Take three shades, the one you think matches, one lighter and one lighter and one darker

2 - Place a stripe of each, down the cheek, side by side, with the nearest match in the middle.

Leave them to dry for about 20 seconds and you will see the foundation more clearly on your skin.

3 - Any colors which are too dark, will start to stand out and any colors too light, will start to appear as white lines.

4 - The correct color, will start to blend in with the skin tone

If you still haven' found a match, move to either lighter or darker colors, and test three new shades using the same process.

How to apply make up - 10 steps to perfect Bronzer

Today on how to apply make up I thought it would be useful to look at how to use a bronzer. This seemed like a good idea, as here at least, the weather is getting cooler and the sun is disappearing and a bronzer is a great way to apply some welcome color to the face.

1. You need 2 brushes - A powder brush and a blush brush

2. Swirl the brush onto the bronzer

3. Tap off the excess

4. The secret to succesful application is to use big C sweeps

5. Start on the forehead and sweep to the cheek bone

6. From the cheek sweep along the jaw-line

7. Apply a little to the nose and forehead

8. Blend in

9. To be on trend in color for fall/winter 2008, use a Coral blush with a gold shimmer

10. Apply to the apple of the cheek and blend slightly, down the cheek

Blusher application is one of those definite less is more, when it comes to learning how to apply make up.

With blusher, there are different effects which can be created: by using, illuminator, cream or powder, but with all of them, the correct way to use blusher is by using a little.

Illuminator

  1. Smile
  2. Apply a little to the middle of the cheek and blend outwards.
  3. Keep high on the apple of the cheek
  4. Avoid getting close to the nose
  5. Avoid getting close to the eye

Powder

You need a good blusher brush Colorescience Blusher/Blender Brush

  1. Smile
  2. Apply only a small amount of powder to the brush
  3. Apply to the centre of the cheek
  4. Avoid getting to close to the nose and face
  5. Tap into the skin, don't pull it
  6. Add more powder to the brush, in small amounts, as required, to enhance the color

Cream blusher

  1. Smile
  2. Whilst qick and easy, means you need to know where to apply it
  3. Apply to the centre of the cheek
  4. Continue to dab small amounts on the cheek, but do not blend.
  5. You are aiming for a barely there look
  6. Avoid coming too close to the eye and nose.

Blush is a great way to enhance your eye and lip colors, so should only be used for adding a healthy glow, in a very subtle manner.

To select the correct blush color, you need to be aware of your skin, then entry on skin tone color will give guidance on this.
